Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching turning one. His papa taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup anything he could about poker. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the adverse comments from others kill his ambition of being one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.
He began playing intently after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching period and winning was not a common outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable passion for poker. He states that he is learning every day and is quite abashed about his success. Phil admits to making errors in each session of poker and always aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he likes winning money games on a normal basis.
