by Gaige on December 14th, 2022
Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker competitor on the planet by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandpa taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup anything he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the negative feedback from others kill his goal of becoming one of the best poker competitors in the world.
He started playing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed many of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable love for poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is very abashed about his success. He knows he makes mistakes in each game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some big tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a regular basis.
