by Gaige on April 11th, 2025

Phil Ivey has been branded as the best poker player on the globe by many of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandfather showed him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn whatever he could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the negative comments from other people kill his ambition of being one of the best poker players in the world.

He started competing intently after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his game at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an eternal passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he is learning every day and is quite humble about his achievements. Phil admits to making blunders in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Even though Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
