by Gaige on September 28th, 2023
Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandpa taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn anything he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the negative comments from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the best poker competitors in the world.
Phil started playing intently after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a learning period and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed quite a few of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to dedication and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every day and is incredibly abashed about his success. Phil knows he makes errors in each session of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Although Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a normal basis.
