by Gaige on May 25th, 2026
Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker player on the planet by many of the top professionals. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandpa introduced him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to discover anything he possibly could about the game. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the negative feedback from others destroy his goal of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
He began competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win was not a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made two final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he defeated a number of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to dedication and an eternal passion for poker. He says that he’s learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. He knows he makes errors in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he likes destroying money games on a normal basis.
