by Gaige on October 13th, 2026
Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandpa taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn every little thing he possibly could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not let the negative feedback from others kill his goal of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He started playing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed many of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to dedication and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. He states that he’s learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making errors in each session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Although Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
